Your Dog And Fireworks
It is that time of the year again when the nights get longer and the celebrations for Bonfire Night begin. Although this can be an enjoyable time of the year for you, for your dog it can be an especially stressful time.
With all the loud noises going off around him or her, your dog can easily get frightened and scared. There are ways however to minimize the stress upon your dog. Defra the government department that oversees the welfare for pets gives useful information on how to prepare for this season.
One of its key messages it gives is to; ‘Prepare a ‘den’ for your pet where it can feel safe and comfortable – perhaps under a bed with some of your old clothes. It may like to hide there when the fireworks start’. Good preparation and use of your dog kennel is therefore key to this time of the year. Not exposing your dog to events such as firework displays or bonfire celebrations is also a good idea to restrict the stress upon them. Instead take them for a walk earlier for this period, in day-light if possible and keep them in their kennel during the night time so that they feel safe and secure.
